The Original Eco Doormat Video

Our handmade traditional coir mats are the original plastic free Eco Doormat.

In a world where progress marches ever on wards, sometimes it’s worth stopping for a moment to consider how things used to be done and see whether there’s something to be learnt from the time honoured methods of the past.

Take doormats for example. For generations these were simply made from coir (another name for coconut fibre), they were woven by hand or on a basic machine and then skilfully stitched to the correct size.

How we make our Eco Doormat.

Take a look at our video to see how we still do it.

In the past.

As coir is a totally natural material, from the outer husks of coconut shells, it is biodegradable. In the past, people would use their doormats until they wore out. Then they could be thrown onto the compost heap where they would break down to nourish the garden leaving no waste behind. The perfect eco doormat solution.

Today.

These days doormats have moved on and now come in many different types and materials including photo personalised mats, cut to size coir matting off the roll and washable synthetic doormats too.

All of these products have a lot to recommend them, they are highly practical and long lasting. However, as we all become more conscious of our impact on the world around us, perhaps it’s worth revisiting the methods of days gone by. If an eco doormat is your aim then go for a traditional coir doormat that’s totally plastic free.

The Environment.

Who could fail to be dismayed at the state of plastic pollution in the oceans as revealed in the recent Blue Planet TV series? It’s unlikely that old doormats would make it as far as the sea. However, there’s currently no way to recycle the ones that contain plastic, so they will ultimately go to landfill. The natural elements will break down but the plastic will remain for a very long time.

How can we help?

One of the best ways we can all protect the environment, is to consume less. Buy good quality products that will really last to minimise your impact. When is comes to doormats, yes you might be able to buy something very cheap and intend to replace it as soon as it wears out. But where will it go when you throw it away?

Quality that lasts.

At makeanentrance.com we focus on quality that lasts. With washable doormats that come up good-as-new, time after time. Or with the highest grade PVC backed matting that it's possible to buy. Yes these do contain plastic, but they will last many times longer than cheaper alternatives.

Best of all, we are one of the only places in the UK that still makes traditional hand stitched 100% coir doormats in the way they have always been.  From our roots as a workshop for blind craftsmen over 30 years ago, we have maintained these traditional skills.

Our customers who buy our hand stitched mats love them for their classic look and their longevity. We have even spoken to customers who claim to have been using the same traditional mat for 20 years or more!
