  • National Apprenticeship Week at Make An Entrance

    Happy National Apprenticeship Week everyone!

    National Apprenticeship week is all about encouraging employers to get ‘Fired Up’ about apprenticeships and the opportunities they provide for businesses.

    At Make An Entrance we’re already fired up about apprenticeships! We are proud to have taken on several apprentices in the past. We are delighted to have played our part to support the career development of young people in Lincolnshire.

    Why do we take on apprentices?

    Joining a small close-knit team within a company which is rapidly expanding provides the perfect opportunity for an apprentice to grow and develop their skills.

    Because we manufacture products at our Lincoln headquarters we offer the ideal environment for young people to experience the extensive operations behind our business cycle. This begins with raw materials arriving from our suppliers and then creating mats before sending out orders to customers.

    While working with us, our apprentices become key members of our team. They offer a new perspective of on our company and products. Often, our apprentices surprise us with new and innovative business ideas!

    What do apprentices learn at Make An Entrance?

    We work with apprentices over a few years so that they’re able to develop a full breadth of knowledge and gain experience across the business.

    Historically we take on apprentices as bespoke workshop technicians. This role involves creating our bespoke coir mats by hand from start to finish.

    The process includes hand-stitching traditional coir and managing the workshop space. They must achieve set objectives to meet orders and finally, distribute the orders to external sub-contractors or customers.

    In addition to the practical skills they gain during their time with us, apprentices also gain a Level 2 Supply Chain Warehouse Operative qualification. As a result, they have the perfect foundation for a career across a variety of manufacturing sectors.

    Will we be taking on apprentices in the future?

    We will have a number of apprenticeship opportunities available in the near future for young people to get involved with at Make An Entrance.

    Apprenticeships are just one of the ways we give back to the Lincolnshire community for the support it has offered us. We actively encourage more businesses to get involved in offering them.

  • Announcing Our Charity of the Year for 2020!

    We’re so pleased to announce that we’ve chosen YMCA Lincolnshire as our Charity of the Year for 2020 – our first ever charity of the year!

    This year we’ve decided to combine all the money we raise from a series of events throughout the year into one pot. This will focus our efforts on making a much bigger difference to our charity of choice.

    Giving back to worthy causes and supporting our local community is an important part of our business. It brings us together as a team and it’s hugely rewarding for us to see all our hard work helping an important cause.

     What is YMCA Lincolnshire?

    YMCA supports vulnerable people in the community. It provides numerous support services and facilities within Lincolnshire, including 24-hour emergency overnight accommodation, housing, day care, youth work and training.

    The charity also runs the Nomad Centre on St Rumbold’s Street in Lincoln, the only permanent direct-access homeless provision in Lincolnshire.

    Why did we choose them as our charity of the year?

    We first got to know the YMCA Lincolnshire team last year when we donated five branded doormats to the charity’s new Nomad Centre.

    We visited the centre to see where the mats would be used. YMCA’s Chief Executive Officer Caroline Killeavy gave us a tour of the facilities.   As a result, we were blown away by the brilliant work being done to support homeless people in Lincoln.

    Having been so impressed by the facilities that are provided at the new Nomad Centre, we made it our aim to raise enough money to sponsor one of the 20 en suite rooms at the facility.

    How will we raise the money?

    We’ve already signed up to take part in various activities throughout the year to raise our target. These include the Lincoln 10K, Action Challenge, the Great North Run and the 2020 Lincoln Santa Fun Run later in the year.

    We are also hosting a series of lent lunches. At these we'll serve a basic meal of soup and bread in exchange for donations. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you like to come along.

    What will the money we raise do?

    Our fundraising target is £5,000. This will cover the cost of sponsoring one room at the Nomad Centre for the next three years.

    The money from the room sponsorship will go towards the great work YMCA does. They work to identify reasons for homelessness, and provide residents with a safe space through their own en suite room. They also provide specialist 24-hour support for the health, well being and individual needs of those staying at the centre.

  • Business Woman of the Year Win for Our Co-Director!

    We’re nearing the end of a fantastic 2019 here at Make An Entrance, and now we’re going out with a bang as our very own co-director Samantha Burlton has been named as Northern England Business Woman of the Year at this year’s National Business Women’s Awards!

    Samantha received the prestigious award at a glamorous awards ceremony on Thursday 12th December at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in Kensington, London.

    Sam was joined by our fellow co-director Stuart Burlton for emotional support during the nerve-wracking moments before the award was announced and to celebrate in style afterwards!

    Why did Sam win Business Woman of the Year?

    Sam scooped the award for her significant accomplishments over the past 12 months. For possessing the award’s key attributes of vision, innovation, entrepreneurial drive, leadership and commitment to gender diversity.

    Sam’s aptitude for business has been evident from a young age. In sixth form she demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by leading her Young Enterprise team to success. They raised enough money through various projects for a trip to the European Parliament.

    She is an experienced and inspirational business leader who has always had entrepreneurial flair. After leaving her previous job in 2004 to write her own business plan, Sam launched our website in 2005. She has continued to build our company which has gone from strength to strength over the last 14 years.

    Sam’s innovative ideas and determination to adapt in order to remain competitive have kept our business at the forefront of the flooring industry producing beautiful, traditional and high-quality doormats using time-honoured techniques.

    What does this mean to Sam?

    Sam is beyond ecstatic to have won and to be finishing what has already been such a great year for our company on yet another high.

    The award is a much-appreciated reward for battling through the business highs and lows she’s faced and for coming out the other side stronger for it.

    She’d like to say a massive thank you to the National Business Women’s Awards for the honour and for putting on such a fantastic awards night.

  • Support Community Gardening with a Charity Calendar

    Christmas is a time for giving and we have the perfect gift for loved ones: a 2020 charity calendar! By purchasing one of these calendars you’ll be able to tick a gift off your Christmas list and help a good cause at the same time – two in one!

    We’ve teamed up with Lincoln Print and Copy Centre and David Harrison Photography to create a 2020 calendar to support a wonderful community interest company called Sage Gardener.

    What is Sage Gardener?

    Sage Gardener runs a community garden set in ancient woodland near Swinderby in Lincolnshire. It is used by members of the local community including those living with dementia and their carers. As well as those who are lonely or affected by mental health issues.

    Sage Gardener’s vegetable, flower, sensory and wildlife gardens act as a social hub to engage members of the community. Activities include gardening, floral and rural crafts to reduce stress and improve health and well being.

    What does the charity calendar include?

    The calendar features stunning wildlife images taken around the Lincolnshire countryside and the great work of volunteers and visitors on site at the various gardens.

    It also features a series of helpful tips on gardening and well-being. This makes it the ideal gift or addition to the home for any green-fingered enthusiasts or local wildlife lovers.

    Why should I buy a calendar?

    All the money raised by purchases of the calendar will go straight towards building a new wooden cabin. This is desperately needed for members of the community to use during the winter months. This will allow regular visitors and bigger groups to continue enjoying the facilities even during periods of bad weather.

    We visited the gardens in November to hear first-hand from Jane Newman, Director at Sage Gardener, about the work they do. We were inspired to hear how they help those of all ages get outdoors. To learn about gardening, crafting and experiencing the rewards of growing your own vegetables.

    As a result, we were inspired to support the amazing work being done by Sage Gardener in any small way we could. Sponsorship and facilitating online orders for the calendars is an easy task for us but makes an enormous difference to the organisation.

  • National Award Recognition for Our Co-Director

    Here at Make An Entrance we think that every single person who has contributed towards building our company is a superstar – and it seems we’re not the only ones!

    Our very own co-director Samantha Burlton has been nominated as Northern England Business Woman of the Year at this year’s National Business Women’s Awards, and we couldn’t be more proud.

    This is the third nomination that we’re celebrating this year. In October Sam was nominated for Business Person of the Year 2019. And Make An Entrance was also nominated in the Small Lincolnshire Business of the Year category at this year’s Lincolnshire Media Business Awards.

    What are the National Business Women’s Awards?

    Now in their third year, the National Business Women’s Awards honour business owners, leaders and inspirational business women across the UK who have achieved significant accomplishments over the past 12 months.

    The 2019 awards are made up of 21 categories and this year’s awards ceremony will take place at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London on Thursday 12th December. Over 250 guests are expected to attend and on the night will be able to enjoy a drinks reception, as well as a three-course meal and entertainment.

    Why has Sam been nominated?

    Sam is an experienced and inspirational business leader who has always had entrepreneurial flair. After leaving her previous job in 2004 to write her own business plan, Sam launched MakeAnEntrance.com in 2005. She has continued to build our company which has gone from strength to strength over the last 14 years.

    Sam’s innovative ideas and determination to adapt in order to remain competitive have kept our business at the forefront of the flooring industry.  We produce beautiful, traditional and high-quality doormats using time-honoured techniques.

    What does it mean to be nominated?

    It is an honour to have Sam shortlisted and recognised alongside the likes of businesswomen from Total Fitness, Crest Nicholson and Systematics International.

    2019 has already been such a great year for our business; we opened our new Lincoln workshop and have taken on our first apprentices. It’s fantastic to be recognised for all the hard work that’s been put in to make the company a success.

  • Doormats for YMCA’s New Nomad Centre

    At Make an Entrance giving back to worthy causes and supporting our local community is an important part of our business.

    When we found out about YMCA Lincolnshire’s latest project to open the new Nomad Centre on St Rumbold’s Street in Lincoln, we were keen to get involved and support the project to help make a difference to the lives of those facing homelessness in the city.

    What is the Nomad Centre?

    The Nomad Centre is a specialist facility for homeless people built by Lindum Group for YMCA Lincolnshire – an organisation which provides a range of support, services and facilities within Lincolnshire including emergency overnight accommodation, housing, day care, youth work and training.

    The YMCA and its projects aim to uphold the worth and dignity of all individuals, ensuring that people of all ages and backgrounds have access to the basic essentials of life and can enjoy the benefits of companionship.

    The Nomad Centre is a new facility which replaces the existing Nomad shelter on Monks Road and is the only permanent direct access homeless provision in Lincolnshire. It has 20 new en suite rooms, two hostel rooms, a professional kitchen and a day centre giving residents 24-hour access.

    The centre was officially opened by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Mr Toby Dennis, on Wednesday 13th November and a community open day was held on Saturday 16th November for members of the public to visit the centre and get first-hand experience of the fantastic facilities.

    How are we involved?

    The Nomad Centre will support those without homes, those forced to sleep rough, those with complex difficult backgrounds and those who have suffered from abuse, addiction or have fallen on hard times. The YMCA therefore wanted to ensure that these rooms were more than just four walls and a bed; every room is designed as a Psychologically Informed Environment (PIE) for Trauma Informed Care (TIC). When we heard about the wide-set corridors and laminated flooring, we knew our doormats would make the perfect welcoming touch.

    Delighted to be able to get involved, we produced five doormats that not only match the Nomad Centre’s branding but are also machine washable so they can be cleaned easily.

    Ahead of the official opening last week, we visited the centre to deliver five of our Carpet Logo Mats, which are each complete with the green-coloured Nomad logo printed big, bright and clear on each mat.

    During our visit we were given a tour of the amazing facility by Rachael Baxter, Community Engagement Manager at YMCA Lincolnshire. The rooms were dressed to appear occupied by residents, with inspiring case studies from those helped by the centre placed in the rooms to highlight the impact the project has on the community. It was fantastic to see how our doormats have instantly added a homely feel to the rooms.

    Why is the new facility so important?

    During our tour, we talked to the centre staff about how important these rooms will be for improving the quality of life for the residents. The whole centre creates a homely and positive environment and is a crucial service given that street homelessness in Lincoln is now three times higher than in 2010.

    We love a challenge at Make An Entrance, that's why we create our book shop doormat. When we saw our favourite book shop struggling to find a suitable doormat we were desperate to help.

    Lindum Books is a beautiful independent bookshop in the heart of Lincoln's bailgate. A gem of a place, filled with a wide range of books from classics to the latest releases. And always with great advice from the dedicated team.

    Why they needed help:

    The lovely building is also a source of one of the challenges the team were facing in terms of finding the right kind of doormat.

    There is no mat well (recess) in the historic quarry tiled floor and the clearance under the door is tiny.  As a result, there was no way they could put any kind of doormat right next to the door. 

    The shop has a compact layout with the desk to the right of the door. The majority of people stride straight ahead to the back of the shop, past the front counter. When we noticed this it gave us an idea.

    Our Logo Mat Solution:

    Let's create a logo doormat to really set off the desk area. But, we'll use it like a runner. This will take advantage of the flow of foot traffic through the store to really keep the floors clean.

    Our Book shop doormat was a brilliant solution and the new mat looks great. It's large to absorb lots of water. Very stylish with the Lindum Books logo in gold on a classic black background.  Most importantly, it's a lovely finishing touch to their recent refurbishment.

    At peak times such as the Lincoln Christmas Market. The book shop team have previously really struggled to keep the floors clean and dry. We're sure that their new Make An Entrance logo mat will have made those problems a thing of the past.
